We are brought up in a world where we constantly compare ourselves to others. We invalidate and judge ourselves based on what the media and entertainment industry tells us is normal. Whether it’s a magazine cover or a favorite TV show, either consciously or subconsciously, we try to match up to often unrealistic expectations.
A recent poll conducted by HealthCorps., a national health and wellness nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, found that 76% of teens have experienced feelings of overwhelming sadness, and 45% often feel sad for no reason. The teens were also asked if they agree with the following statement, “At times, I feel like I am worthless,” to which 41% of students agreed and 14% strongly agreed.
The survey of 376 high school students was conducted from April 3 to April 14, 2017 as part of HealthCorps.’ ongoing assessment of teens’ attitudes and habits toward physical and mental health and wellness. Even if many of them later put this information out of sight and mind, it is still running in the background like a program on your computer. It is a filter through which they perceive their environment.
In Dr. Bruce Lipton’s book, The Biology of Belief https://www.brucelipton.com/books/biology-of-belief, he points out the importance of uncovering our subconscious beliefs. Since he states that over 90% of our day is operating in subconscious mode – the programming, conditioning, and beliefs we’ve either learned or been spoon fed are running uninterrupted and can be unconsciously influencing how we react to the circumstances in our lives.
